Two persons were taken into custody after a joint operation led to the recovery of 38 vials of suspected brown sugar from a vehicle in Kumarghat, police said on Monday.
Acting on specific intelligence, a joint force team carried out the operation and intercepted the vehicle. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of brown sugar packed in 38 containers.
On receiving information about the incident, Kumarghat police station personnel reached the spot swiftly. The Deputy Collector and Magistrate (DCM) of Kumarghat was present at the site during the operation. All legal procedures required under law are being completed in his presence.
According to police, the two persons travelling in the vehicle have been identified as Rajesh Das (41), resident of Puran Kalibari under Kumarghat Police Station area, and Sajal Das (45), resident of Ratbari under Kumarghat Police Station area.
Both have been taken into police custody. Legal procedures relating to weighing the seized suspected contraband, chemical examination and seizure are underway.
Police said a case is being registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) in connection with the incident. Investigation into the matter is continuing.
