The death toll from the ongoing floods in Assam has climbed to 47 after six more deaths were reported on Thursday, while more than 7.21 lakh people remain affected across 11 districts.
According to the latest official figures, 24,124 people are currently staying in 103 relief camps, and 255 relief distribution centres have been set up to provide assistance to those impacted.
The flood situation remains critical in the Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, which together account for nearly 94% of the total affected population. Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with over 3.75 lakh people affected and nearly 300 villages inundated. The district also reported four of the six deaths recorded on Thursday. Charaideo has over 1.86 lakh affected residents, while more than 1.15 lakh people have been impacted in Jorhat.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a high-level review meeting in Dispur to assess the flood situation and oversee ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. The meeting reviewed the extent of damage to embankments, roads and bridges, as well as the progress of relief operations. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure the uninterrupted supply of relief materials, essential food items and safe drinking water to flood-affected communities.
