Minister Bikash Debbarma Announces Landmark ST Education Reform

Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma on Wednesday announced that the state has become the first in India to introduce the empanelment of private B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. institutions under the Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe (ST) Students scheme, describing it as a major step towards strengthening access to quality teacher education for tribal students.
The minister said the pioneering initiative has been introduced to ensure greater transparency, accountability and a more efficient implementation of the scholarship scheme while expanding educational opportunities for tribal youth.
Debbarma also chaired a review meeting with officials of the Tribal Welfare Department and representatives of the newly empanelled institutions to discuss the effective implementation of the scheme for the 2026–27 academic session. The meeting reviewed institutional responsibilities, compliance with prescribed guidelines and measures to ensure the smooth execution of the programme in the interest of students.
Highlighting the significance of the reform, the minister said the initiative reflects the Tripura government's commitment to empowering Scheduled Tribe students through quality education and creating better opportunities for aspiring teachers. He expressed confidence that the new empanelment system would enhance transparency in the scholarship process and enable deserving students to pursue professional teacher training with greater ease.
