A high-level committee comprising senior police officers will be constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, Acting DGP G.S. Rao announced on Tuesday amid growing public demand for a transparent probe.
Addressing the media after paying tributes to the late police chief, Rao said the inquiry would be conducted strictly in accordance with the law and that the multi-officer panel would examine every aspect of the case. He said the committee would begin its work shortly and assured that the investigation would be fair, impartial and evidence-based.
Earlier in the day, the mortal remains of the late DGP were placed at the State Secretariat, where Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Cabinet ministers, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, senior civil and police officials, legislators and other dignitaries paid their last respects. Describing Dhankar's death as an irreparable loss to the state, the Chief Minister reiterated that the truth behind the incident would be established through due legal process.
The decision to constitute the committee comes as questions continue to be raised over the circumstances surrounding the death of the state's top police officer.
Opposition parties, including the CPI(M) and the Congress, have demanded an independent investigation, while reports indicate that two mobile phones belonging to the late DGP are yet to be traced.
Investigators are relying on forensic evidence and the post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary forensic observations suggest the case appears to be one of suicide, though officials have maintained that no final conclusion will be drawn until all forensic and medical reports are received and examined.
According to officials, Dhankar had arrived at the Police Headquarters on Monday morning and instructed staff not to disturb him for some time. When he failed to respond, officials forced open the locked washroom attached to his office chamber and found him unconscious. He was immediately shifted to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident has sent shockwaves through the police establishment and administrative circles across the state.
