Indian Army Launches Flood Rescue Mission in Assam

The Indian Army has launched Operation Jal Rahat to support the Assam government in large-scale rescue and relief operations as severe floods continue to affect several districts across eastern Assam.
Continuous rainfall has worsened the flood situation, with several rivers in Upper Assam flowing above the danger mark and inundating vast areas. The Army, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), has been deployed in the worst-hit districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat.
Assam Minister Bimal Borah reviewed the flood situation in Sivasagar and Charaideo on Monday and held discussions with the Deputy Commissioners to assess the ongoing rescue and relief efforts. In a social media post, the Minister said rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing.
According to the Minister, 510 people have been rescued in Sivasagar district by SDRF and Fire and Emergency Services teams. Additional rescue boats have been deployed, while Indian Army helicopters are being used to evacuate people stranded in inaccessible flood-affected areas.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have affected eight districts—Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Udalguri and Jorhat. As of Sunday evening, 22 revenue circles and 298 villages remained affected, impacting more than 57,000 people. The floods have also inundated over 3,874 hectares of agricultural land.
