Tripura shocked as DGP Anurag Dhankar dies allegedly by suicide

In a shocking development that has sent ripples through Tripura's administrative and law enforcement circles, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Preliminary reports indicate that the senior IPS officer allegedly died by suicide, though authorities are yet to officially confirm the exact cause of death.
The unexpected demise of the state's top police officer has left the government, police fraternity and the public in disbelief. Soon after the incident came to light, senior government officials and high-ranking police officers rushed to the Police Headquarters and later to GB Pant Hospital, where the body was taken for medico-legal formalities.
Senior doctor Dr. Pradip Bhowmik said, “The DGP was brought to GBP Hospital at around 12 PM today and at around 12:48 PM we declared him dead. We have sent the body for post mortem to unearth the cause of his death.” Dhankar was found unconscious in his office chamber on Monday morning. hHe was later rushed to GBP Hospital.
Police have remained tight-lipped about the circumstances leading to the incident, and no official statement explaining the reasons behind the alleged suicide had been issued till the filing of this report. Investigators are expected to examine all aspects surrounding the tragedy, while a detailed inquiry is likely to be initiated.
Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, assumed charge as the state's Director General of Police in May 2025. During his distinguished career, he served in several key positions in Tripura and on central deputation with agencies including the CBI and CISF, earning a reputation as an experienced and accomplished police officer.
