Tuition Ban Welcomed By Public, But Doubts Over Implementation Remain

Agartala, Jul 19: Citing the presence of numerous unemployed yet capable private tutors across both towns and villages, social media users have backed the Sepahijala District Education Office's July 17, 2026 memorandum banning private tuition by government teachers, even as they expressed doubt over its lasting impact.The order, issued by District Education Officer Kanika Debbarma, directs all teachers serving under government and government aided schools in the district to stop private tuition, private coaching, or similar teaching activities with immediate effect, with violations to be met with disciplinary action under the applicable Service Rules.
The memorandum drew on a September 3, 2015 order of the Tripura High Court in a public interest litigation concerning the prohibition of private tuition by government teachers, along with a 2023 memo from the Directorate of School Education reiterating the same directive. It stated that despite these standing instructions, some teachers under Sepahijala district had reportedly continued engaging in private tuition and coaching activities, which the department termed a violation of established norms. All heads of institutions were instructed to notify teachers under their charge, ensure strict compliance, and promptly report any violation for disciplinary action.
Reacting to the order, Anup Baidya wrote in support of the move, "This should be stopped completely. There are many unemployed yet brilliant private tutors, from the city to the villages, everywhere. Such a directive is extremely practical, timely and relevant." He added, however, that he was doubtful of its long-term effect, noting that comparable orders had been issued at least 10 times before without producing lasting results. The memorandum was marked "Most Urgent" and was to be enforced strictly across all schools under Sepahijala district.
