Two Mothers Donate Kidneys to Save Sons in Successive Free Transplants at GBP Hospital

Agartala, Jul 16: Two young men in Tripura have been granted a fresh lease on life after their respective 45-year-old mothers successfully donated their kidneys during back-to-back transplant surgeries performed at AGMC and GBP Hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday.The operations, which mark the eighth and ninth successful kidney transplants at the state-run facility, involved intense six-hour procedures each day from 9 am to 3 pm. On Tuesday, a 22-year-old youth from Chailengta in Dhalai district received a kidney from his mother. The following day, a 23-year-old from the Padmanagar area of Bishramganj in Sepahijala district underwent the same life-saving procedure, also with his mother acting as the donor.
According to hospital authorities, all four individuals, both the donors and the recipients, are healthy and recovering well under close medical observation.The complex procedures were executed through a collaborative effort between specialist doctors from Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, and a visiting medical team from Shija Hospital in Manipur. Providing massive financial relief to the families, the hospital performed both surgeries entirely free of charge. In fact, all nine kidney transplants conducted at the facility so far have been completely free for the patients. Moreover, the Tripura government bears all travel expenses for the visiting medical experts from Manipur.
A large multidisciplinary medical team oversaw the successful operations. The local medical unit from the AGMC and GBP Hospital Nephrology Department included Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das, and Dr. Udayan Saha. They were joined by urologists Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh, and Dr. Jiban Debnath, along with anesthesiologists Dr. Bhaskar Majumder and Dr. Tapan Debbarma. Representing Shija Hospital and Research Institute were consultant urologists and transplant surgeons Dr. Paonam Samarendra Singh and Dr. Maharaban Mahale, consultant anesthesiologist Dr. Tahenjam Kennedy Singh, and DNB anesthesiologist Dr. Shreya Kumar Dubey.
The extensive surgical process was managed with the joint participation of nursing officers, floor nurses, and OT technicians from both hospitals. Senior nursing officers Tapati Chakraborty and Sanjib Kumar Das were in charge of the overall supervision of the transplant operations. It is learned that these surgeries were strictly conducted following standard medical protocols. The operations were greenlit only after comprehensive donor-recipient kidney matching, necessary medical testing, and the formal approval of the designated authorization committee. Reportedly, the establishment and success of the kidney transplant program at the AGMC and GBP Hospital Nephrology Department has been made possible through the dedicated efforts of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
