Mob Threatens IGM Staff After Pregnant Woman's Death, THRC Orders Probe Into Negligence Claim

Agartala, Jul 9: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) revealed that a crowd of nearly a hundred people, including the husband of a woman who died at IGM Hospital, allegedly created a disturbance and threatened on-duty medical staff soon after her death. The Commission also ordered a probe into allegations of medical negligence in the case.The Commission took suo-motu cognizance of the death of Bibha Debnath (33), wife of Pankaj Debnath of Amtali, Baishnab Tilla, following news reports published on May 30, 2026, in local newspapers, which alleged negligence at the hospital.
According to a report submitted by Dr. Pradyut Kumar Debbarma, in charge of Unit 2, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, doctors were informed around 10:30 am on May 29 that the deceased patient's husband, along with other people, was creating a disturbance in front of the labour room, allegedly using slang and threatening language and harassing an on-duty female nursing officer.
The mob reportedly snatched the original bed head ticket of the deceased patient, which police personnel later recovered and handed to the nursing officer. The mob then allegedly snatched a photocopy of the same document before police took a vehicle to shift the body to AGMC and GBP Hospital.
The Commission observed that the health department's inquiry report failed to explain why the patient, who had been advised an emergency caesarean section but did not receive consent for it, was not referred elsewhere for treatment. It has directed its Investigation Wing to examine the allegations and submit a report, with the case listed for August 12, 2026.
