Tripura Acts on Centre's Directive, Makes 'Vande Mataram' Singing Compulsory in Schools

Agartala, Jul 7: Acting on directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on the protocol and official version of "Vande Mataram," the Tripura government has ordered all schools in the state to open each school day with its full community singing, followed by the National Anthem "Jan-Gana-Mana," the Education (School) Department said in a notification issued on July 3, 2026. The Ministry's directive, vide File No. 14/2/2025-Public, dated January 28, 2026, mandates protocol across formal, semi-formal and educational forums to instill national pride and preserve the National Song's heritage.
According to the notification, the decision applies to all government, government-aided and privately managed schools, including government-aided and un-aided recognised Madrassa schools, to promote national integration among the youth. As per the guidelines, whenever the National Song is sung or played, students, faculty and administrative staff shall stand to attention as a mark of respect and decorum.The decision was taken by the Council of Ministers, Tripura, communicated vide No. F.8(10)-GA (CAB)/2026, dated June 25, 2026.
Sharing the notification on his official social media handle, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said, "To further strengthen patriotism, discipline and national consciousness among students, the Tripura government has taken an important decision. From now on, daily classes in all schools of the state will begin with the full collective rendition of the national song 'Vande Mataram', followed by the singing of the national anthem 'Jan-Gana-Mana'." "Through this effort, alongside fostering national unity, respect for cultural heritage and a sense of responsibility towards the nation, a resolve has been taken to shape the coming generation into more conscious and patriotic citizens," he added.
