Tripura Lags Behind Northeast States in MPLAD Fund Utilisation

Agartala, Jul 5: While Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya lead the country in MPLAD fund utilisation, Tripura finds itself far behind other Northeast Indian states, having spent just 22.78 percent of the Rs 41.7 crore allocated to its three Members of Parliament, data from the Empowered India digital platform has shown. According to the latest figures, Tripura ranks 22nd among the country's 36 states and union territories in utilising Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds.
The national average stands at nearly 74 percent, more than three times the state's utilisation rate. Of the total Rs 41.7 crore allocated to Tripura's three MPs, only about Rs 9.5 crore has been spent so far. The slow pace has also affected implementation on the ground. Nearly 100 development projects have been recommended across the state, but only one has been completed to date.
Among the three MPs, Biplab Kumar Deb has the highest utilisation rate at 31.12 percent, having spent about Rs 4.6 crore of his Rs 14.7 crore allocation. He recommended 29 projects, none of which has been completed yet. Rajib Bhattacharjee follows with 24.92 percent utilisation, spending about Rs 3.5 crore of his Rs 12.3 crore allocation. He recommended 56 projects and is the only MP whose fund has seen a completed project.
Kriti Devi Debbarman recorded the lowest utilisation at 12.67 percent, spending about Rs 1.9 crore of her Rs 14.7 crore allocation. None of her 49 recommended projects has been completed so far.Nagaland topped the national list at 82.3 percent, followed by Mizoram at 73.8 percent and Meghalaya at 63.9 percent. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Assam also fared better than Tripura, raising questions over administrative efficiency in the state.
