CM Manik Saha Flags Off Tripura's First Electric Train

Agartala, July 4: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday inaugurated a new chapter in Tripura's railway history by flagging off the inaugural Agartala–Karimganj Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service from Agartala Railway Station, marking the launch of the state's first electric train and the first electric MEMU service in the Northeast. The 12-coach electric MEMU was flagged off in the presence of Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, senior railway officials and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha described the launch as a landmark achievement in Tripura's development and rail modernisation. Recalling the state's railway journey, he said the first train reached Dharmanagar from Kalkalighat in Assam in 1964, while rail services were extended to Kumarghat in 1990. He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accelerating railway development in the state through broad-gauge expansion and the introduction of several new train services.
"This is a proud day for Tripura. The state's first electric train reflects our commitment to modern infrastructure and improved public transport," the Chief Minister said. He noted that the MEMU, equipped with modern passenger amenities, including CCTV surveillance, would provide safer, faster and more comfortable travel while strengthening connectivity between Tripura and neighbouring Assam. Dr. Saha said the launch of the electric MEMU represents another milestone in the state's infrastructure growth and aligns with the government's vision of enhancing connectivity and promoting sustainable transportation.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said Agartala Railway Station now operates 18 trains, including 13 express and five DEMU services. He informed that the newly introduced 12-coach MEMU has the capacity to carry around 3,600 passengers, significantly improving commuter convenience. He added that the introduction of the new service also responds to public demand, particularly from commuters at Jirania railway station, reflecting the government's commitment to improving rail services across the state.
