Tripura Seeks Release of Rs 340 Crore Pending MGNREGA Dues from Centre

Tripura has urged the Centre to release pending material dues of around Rs 340 crore under the previous Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, a demand raised by state minister Kishor Barman at a National Rural Development Conference held in New Delhi.
The two-day conference was organised by the Union Ministry of Rural Development and chaired by Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Rural development ministers from 29 states along with senior officials of the central and state governments attended the event. Tripura's Higher Education and Panchayat Minister Kishore Barman represented the state government.
Speaking at the conference, Barman said Tripura is fully prepared to implement the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Grameen). He said all administrative, financial and legal preparations have already been completed to launch the scheme from July 1, 2026.
"The state government is committed to the effective implementation of rural development projects and will play an active role in fulfilling the goals of Viksit Bharat," Barman said.
He raised several demands before the Centre, including quick release of Rs 482 crore for the July-September 2026 quarter along with the pending MGNREGA material dues. He also appealed for greater administrative flexibility for states in implementing water conservation, rural infrastructure, livelihood based projects and climate resilience schemes.
On rural housing, Barman said around 2 lakh 56 thousand eligible families in Tripura are currently awaiting permanent housing. He demanded approval of an additional 1 lakh 50 thousand houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) for the current financial year.
The minister also sought special financial assistance of Rs 50 crore for repair and maintenance of rural roads transferred from agencies such as NBCC and HSCL under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
Concluding his address, Barman said, "If these projects are implemented through coordinated efforts of the central and state governments, Tripura's rural development will accelerate further, strengthening the foundation for building Viksit Bharat."
