US Says Quad Central to Indo-Pacific Strategy Amid Push to Diversify Critical Supply Chains

The United States has said that the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) remains a key pillar of its Indo-Pacific strategy, alongside efforts to strengthen alliances and reduce reliance on China for critical minerals.
Testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael G. DeSombre said the Indo-Pacific region is of “vital strategic importance” to Washington. He said the administration’s approach focuses on strengthening partnerships through the Quad, as well as trilateral cooperation with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, in addition to initiatives such as AUKUS.
DeSombre said the United States is working to preserve peace in the Taiwan Strait, ensure freedom of navigation in international waters, strengthen maritime law enforcement, and reduce dependence on China for critical minerals used in key industries.
Lawmakers also highlighted India’s role in the Quad, with Ranking Member Ami Bera noting that New Delhi plays a critical part in the grouping alongside the United States, Japan, and Australia.
The remarks reflect Washington’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy that combines alliance-building, regional security cooperation, and supply chain diversification amid rising geopolitical competition.
