Minister Ratan Lal Nath Unveils Roadmap to Take Tripura’s Queen Pineapple Global

Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform the state's famed GI-tagged Queen Pineapple into a globally recognised brand by expanding cultivation, strengthening processing infrastructure and creating a sustainable value chain for farmers.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi ahead of the Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2026, Nath announced that the state government plans to increase the area under Queen Pineapple cultivation from the existing 12,000 hectares to 15,000 hectares over the next three years. He also revealed that two bromelain extraction plants—one in Agartala and another in Gomati district—will be established to promote value addition and boost farmers' income.
Highlighting the importance of the state's signature fruit, Nath said the Queen Pineapple, declared Tripura's state fruit in 2018 and recognised with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, is renowned for its exceptional sweetness and premium quality.
"Our objective is to build a complete value chain that will take Tripura's Queen Pineapple to international markets while ensuring direct economic benefits for our farmers," the minister said.
According to Nath, Tripura currently produces nearly 1.78 lakh tonnes of pineapple annually from around 12,000 hectares of cultivated land. To strengthen production, processing and marketing, the state has launched a Rs 234-crore project with financial assistance from the Central Government and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
The minister said the Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2026, scheduled to be held from June 27 to 29 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, will showcase the state's premium agricultural produce, cultural heritage and tourism potential. The festival, which coincides with International Pineapple Day on June 27, will feature 25 exhibition stalls and honour three outstanding Queen Pineapple farmers for their contributions to the sector.
Invitations have been extended to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and other distinguished guests. Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Members of Parliament and senior government officials are also expected to participate in the event.
Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Agriculture Secretary Apurba Roy, Director of Horticulture Phanibhusan Jamatia and Tripura Organic Mission Director Rajib Debbarma were also present at the press conference.
