CM Manik Saha Recalls Emergency as a Dark Chapter in India’s Democracy

Agartala, June 25: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday termed the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, as one of the darkest chapters in the history of Indian democracy and paid tribute to those who stood firm in defence of constitutional values and democratic freedoms.
Marking Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, Dr. Saha said the Emergency declared by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi-led government represented a grave assault on the Constitution, freedom of the press, and the fundamental rights of citizens. In a message shared on social media, the Chief Minister alleged that the period was marked by authoritarian rule aimed at silencing dissent and concentrating power.
Paying homage to the individuals who resisted the Emergency, Dr. Saha praised their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding democracy. He said their struggle against authoritarianism continues to inspire generations and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting democratic institutions.
The Chief Minister urged citizens to remember the lessons of the Emergency and reaffirm their commitment to preserving the values enshrined in the Constitution. He stressed that democracy thrives when civil liberties, freedom of expression, and the rule of law are respected and protected.
Dr. Saha’s remarks came as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas was observed across Tripura through various commemorative programmes and public events remembering those who fought to uphold democratic principles during one of the most controversial periods in independent India’s political history.
