Queen Máxima Explores India’s Digital Finance Ecosystem in Mumbai

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA), visited Mumbai on Tuesday to study India’s digital payments ecosystem and payroll-linked financial services aimed at improving the financial well-being of salaried individuals.
During her visit, Queen Máxima toured HCG Cancer Hospital in Colaba, where she interacted with healthcare professionals using SalarySe, a fintech platform integrated with corporate payroll systems. The platform offers services such as instant credit, UPI-based payments, and financial wellness tools designed to help employees better manage their finances.
Speaking on the importance of financial inclusion, Queen Máxima said access to financial services is essential for helping individuals cope with unexpected expenses, build savings, and improve budgeting. She noted that technology is playing a key role in enabling people to make informed financial decisions through insights into their spending patterns.
The Queen also praised India’s digital public infrastructure, highlighting the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Aadhaar, and the Account Aggregator framework. She emphasized that while expanding access to financial services remains important, the focus should now shift towards achieving better financial health outcomes for individuals.
As part of her three-day visit to India, Queen Máxima is scheduled to attend an event organised by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and meet Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Wednesday before proceeding to Delhi for further engagements.
