Tripura to Get First Govt Ayurvedic Medical College with 60 BAMS Seats from 2026-27

Agartala, Jun 19: The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has formally accepted Tripura's application to establish a government Ayurvedic medical college, clearing the way for a 60-seat Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) institution at Tepania under Udaipur Sub-division in Gomati from the 2026-27 academic session. The acceptance letter dated June 18 was addressed to the Secretary of Tripura's Health and Family Welfare Department. The institution will be named Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital.
The application was filed on December 30, 2025 by Shri Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao, IAS, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, seeking permission under section 29 of the NCISM Act 2020. Notably, the NCISM pointed out that MESAR UG Regulations 2024 initially had no provision for 60-seat BAMS colleges under section 29. However, after the matter was placed before the commission, it was decided to accept such applications from 2026-27 onwards, subject to fulfilment of prescribed requirements. The letter was signed by Dr. Mukul Patel, President, Medical Assessment and Rating Board, NCISM.
Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha shared the news on his official social media handle. "I am delighted to share that the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has accepted our application for the establishment of the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Udaipur with an intake capacity of 60 seats from the academic session 2026-27," he wrote. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "visionary leadership and unwavering support," and said the development would "significantly enhance Ayurvedic education, promote traditional systems of medicine, and create new opportunities for aspiring students in Tripura."
