Meghalaya Hosts First Sports Conclave Ahead of 2027 National Games

Meghalaya on Tuesday hosted its first-ever Sports Conclave in Shillong, marking a significant step in the state's preparations for the 39th National Games, scheduled to be held in 2027.
Addressing the inaugural session, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the state's vision extends beyond hosting the Games and focuses on building a strong and sustainable sporting ecosystem. He emphasized the need to identify and nurture grassroots talent while creating greater opportunities for young athletes.
Sangma said the government is restructuring the sports sector through strategic planning and investment to promote discipline, encourage youth participation, and achieve long-term sporting success.
Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said the conclave would play an important role in shaping sports governance, fostering innovation, and strengthening athlete development across the state.
World Athletics Vice President Dr Adille Sumariwalla highlighted the importance of developing robust systems and support structures to convert sporting talent into sustained success at national and international levels.
During the event, 15 outstanding athletes from six different disciplines were honoured with cash awards in recognition of their achievements.
The conclave is expected to generate key recommendations aimed at improving sports infrastructure, athlete development, and governance, as Meghalaya gears up to host the 2027 National Games.
