Tripura’s Sarinda Earns GI Tag, CM Calls It a Proud Cultural Achievement

In a significant boost to Tripura’s cultural heritage, the traditional Sarinda, a stringed folk musical instrument deeply rooted in the state’s indigenous traditions, has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Announcing the achievement on Tuesday, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha described the recognition as a proud moment for the people of Tripura and a major step toward preserving the state’s rich cultural legacy. He said the GI tag would not only help safeguard the unique identity of the Sarinda but also promote the traditional craftsmanship associated with its making.
“The recognition of Tripura Sarinda as a GI-tagged product is a matter of immense pride for our state. It will contribute to the preservation and promotion of our folk traditions while creating new opportunities for local artisans and musicians,” the Chief Minister said in a social media post.
With the inclusion of the Sarinda, Tripura now boasts four GI-tagged products. The list includes Queen Pineapple, Risha/Pachra (Rignai), Matabari Peda, and the newly recognized Tripura Sarinda. The Chief Minister extended his heartfelt congratulations to the artisans, craftsmen and musicians who have kept the tradition alive through generations.
The GI tag is expected to enhance the national and international recognition of the instrument, increase its market value, and encourage greater efforts toward the preservation of Tripura’s indigenous art and cultural practices.
