Passengers block overcrowded Train at Jirania for Three Hours

Hundreds of passengers staged a protest and blocked the Agartala–Karimganj local train at Jirania railway station on Monday after being unable to board the overcrowded service, disrupting rail traffic for nearly three hours.
According to commuters, the train departed Agartala at 7:20 a.m. with fewer coaches than usual and became heavily crowded after picking up passengers from Badharghat and Jogendranagar stations. By the time it reached Jirania, many waiting passengers were unable to board due to the lack of space.
Angered by the situation, passengers prevented the train from moving forward and demanded immediate intervention from railway authorities. Protesters accused the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) of failing to provide adequate coaches despite the heavy rush of daily commuters.
“This is a recurring problem. Every day passengers face severe overcrowding, and today the situation went beyond control,” said one commuter during the protest.
Railway officials held discussions with the agitating passengers, following which the blockade was lifted. The train eventually resumed its journey towards Karimganj at around 10:12 a.m.
Sources in the railway department confirmed that the train had been operating with a reduced number of coaches, resulting in an acute shortage of passenger space. No official statement had been issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway regarding the incident till the filing of this report.
The disruption has once again drawn attention to the persistent issue of overcrowding on local train services in Tripura and the growing demand for additional coaches to accommodate daily commuters.
