Left-Congress Panel Sweeps TBA Elections, Pritha Deb Paul Elected President

Agartala, Jun 14: Advocate Pritha Deb Paul was elected President of the Tripura Bar Association on Saturday, leading the Left-Congress Samvidhan Bachao Manch to a dominant performance in the 2026-28 polls, as the panel secured 10 of 15 posts across four voting booths in a ballot paper-based election. Paul won with 186 votes, beating Mrinal Kanti Biswas (165) and Subrata Debnath (158). Jiban Krishna Sen claimed the Vice-President post with 221 votes, while Bhaskar Debbarma took the Secretary's seat with 298 votes. Mallika Saha and Bhabani Ranjan Bhattacharjee won the two Assistant Secretary posts with 319 and 219 votes respectively.
In the Members (Women Reserve) category, Ruthi Debbarma topped with 322 votes, followed by Likha Bhowmik (280) and Bhandari Reang (237). Among the seven General Member seats, Swarup Pandit led with 342 votes, ahead of Niladri Mukharjee (313), Debabrata Debnath (306), Kishalay Roy (291), Debjyoti Debnath (271), and Anirban Lodh and Arpan Das, who tied at 266 each. Returning Officer Pulak Kr. Debnath declared the results.
Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhary welcomed the result as "a highly positive political development," adding that this was likely the panel's fourth consecutive victory at the Bar Association. He said it proves "a majority of the people in Tripura, regardless of their profession, are deeply dissatisfied with the BJP's politics" and termed it "a warning to the ruling party that authority cannot be established everywhere simply through muscle power."
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said the outcome was "a clear indication that intellectuals and common people want a breath of fresh air away from the BJP's control." He alleged a large police contingent arrived on court premises during counting, which he said "felt like an attempt to create mental pressure."
