Assam has emerged as the third-largest rubber-producing state in India, after Kerala and Tripura, marking a significant milestone in the state’s agricultural and industrial growth.
Speaking at a press briefing organized by the Department of Commerce in Guwahati on Tuesday as part of the Government of India’s nationwide campaign commemorating 12 years of governance, Rubber Board Executive Director M. Vasanthagesan highlighted the vast potential for rubber cultivation in Assam and the wider Northeast region.
He said the Rubber Board is focusing on expanding the area under rubber cultivation while also improving productivity to help bridge the country’s natural rubber demand-supply gap. According to Vasanthagesan, rubber plantations in the Northeast currently cover around 1.8 lakh hectares, with nearly 50,000 hectares located in Assam.
The development underscores Assam’s growing importance in India’s rubber economy and reflects the increasing role of the Northeast in boosting domestic natural rubber production.
