Minister Tinku Roy Unveils Expanded Welfare Measures, Anganwadi Modernization Drive

Minister for Social Welfare & Social Education, Tinku Roy on Tuesday announced a series of major welfare initiatives and infrastructure upgrades aimed at strengthening social security and child development services across Tripura.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat, Roy highlighted the state government's efforts to expand social assistance coverage, modernize Anganwadi centres, and improve support systems for women, children, persons with disabilities, and tribal communities.
The minister informed that under the National Social Assistance Programme, the state is currently providing a monthly pension of Rs 2,000 to 1,34,294 beneficiaries. He also stated that 100 Anganwadi centres have been converted into modern English-medium centres, while 562 centres have been upgraded into “Empowered Anganwadis” to enhance service delivery.
Focusing on tribal welfare, Roy said that 226 new Anganwadi centres have been established in tribal-dominated areas under the Prime Minister’s Tribal Mission. Additionally, 119 centres have been opened under the Dharati Aba Tribal Campaign. He noted that 3,559 Anganwadi centres have already been electrified, with plans to provide electricity to all centres and connect another 5,000 centres during the 2026-27 financial year.
Highlighting child welfare initiatives, the minister said the government has intensified efforts to prevent child marriage and introduced four new welfare schemes in the 2025-26 budget. Under the Chief Minister’s Kanya Bibah Yojana, financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each was provided to 45 eligible brides aged 18 years and above. The Chief Minister’s Balika Samriddhi Yojana has so far benefited 105 girls through fixed-deposit support.
Roy further stated that under the Chief Minister’s Scheme for Persons with Intellectual Disability, 3,492 beneficiaries received financial assistance of Rs 5,000 each during 2025-26. The government has also sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the establishment of a recreation centre for persons with intellectual disabilities.
The minister said that 20,027 persons are currently receiving a monthly disability pension of Rs 2,000. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Rs 12.75 crore was disbursed among 46,904 beneficiaries during 2025-26, while 3,303 beneficiaries have already been assisted in the current financial year. He added that the state is implementing more than 35 social pension and welfare schemes under various state and Chief Minister’s assistance programmes.
To support working women, the government has established four Sathi Nibas safe houses and is constructing ten working women’s hostels at a cost of Rs 114 crore. Under Mission Vatsalya, a consolidated child home in South Tripura will be built at a cost of Rs 5.58 crore, along with a girls’ child home costing Rs 1.34 crore.
Addressing concerns regarding payments to Anganwadi workers, Roy said the state provides higher honoraria than many other states. He acknowledged delays in the release of April and May honoraria but assured that the issue has been resolved. However, he noted that matters related to regularization of Anganwadi workers and gratuity benefits remain pending at the national level.
The minister also announced that special public welfare camps scheduled from June 14 to 16 will be utilized to connect more eligible beneficiaries with the four newly introduced welfare schemes.
