National Award-Winning Malayalam Actor Salim Kumar Dies at 57 in Kochi


National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night at a private hospital in Kochi. He was 57.

Kumar, who had been receiving medical treatment, died at around 10:45 pm, family sources said.

The veteran actor began his career in entertainment through mimicry and television comedy shows before making his film debut in 1996 with Ishtamanu Nooruvattam, directed by Siddique Shameer. Over a prolific career spanning nearly three decades, he appeared in around 350 films and won wide acclaim for his unique style and versatility.

In 2010, Salim Kumar received the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Kerala State Film Award for his powerful performance in Adaminte Makan Abu. His work in Malayalam cinema also earned him the State Award for Best Supporting Actor for Achanurangatha Veedu and Best Comedian for Ayalum Njanum.

Beyond Malayalam films, he acted in several Tamil movies including Appavin Meesai, Nedunchalai, and Maryan, as well as in the Odia film Oonga and the Bengali film Mayabazar.
