India, US Continue Trade Talks Amid Proposed Tariff Review

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has said that India remains engaged in discussions with the United States regarding the proposed tariffs under Section 301 proceedings of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974.
The statement comes after the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) concluded investigations involving 60 economies, including India, concerning measures aimed at preventing the import of certain goods. Following the investigations, the USTR proposed additional tariffs on imports from these economies.
The Ministry noted that India is actively participating in the consultation process while also working with the United States to finalize a bilateral trade framework agreement announced in February this year.
According to the Ministry, products already covered under Section 232 tariffs, along with certain other categories, have been excluded from the proposed tariff measures. A special mechanism has also been suggested for textile and apparel products, which could allow a specified volume of imports from selected economies to enter the U.S. market at lower tariff rates.
The proposed tariffs are not yet final. Stakeholders may submit requests to participate in public hearings until June 22, while written comments can be filed until July 6. Public hearings on the matter are scheduled to be held on July 7.
