Conrad K. Sangma, Himanta Biswa Sarma Hold Talks to Ease Lapangap Border Tensions

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Friday to discuss the ongoing tensions in the Lapangap area along the Assam–Meghalaya border.
The meeting focused on measures to de-escalate tensions between neighbouring villages and explore a constructive path towards resolving the long-standing border-related issues. Senior officials from both state governments were also present during the discussions.
Speaking after the meeting, Sangma described the talks as positive and constructive, stating that both governments are committed to addressing the concerns of residents in the affected areas. He said officials from the two states would take necessary steps in the coming days to ease tensions and work towards a resolution.
In a post on X, Sangma urged residents on both sides of the border to maintain peace and cooperate as the governments work towards a permanent solution to the dispute. He also thanked Sarma for assuring Meghalaya of Assam’s support in jointly addressing concerns and preventing future tensions.
Sarma, meanwhile, said the discussions had yielded encouraging progress on several long-standing issues. He noted that both states had agreed to expedite the ongoing boundary demarcation process to reach a lasting settlement of the border dispute.
The meeting comes amid renewed tensions in the Lapangap region, with both state governments reiterating their commitment to maintaining peace, stability and law and order in the border areas.
