Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Relief Scheme for Commercial Vehicle Owners

The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a one-time settlement scheme offering major penalty waivers to commercial vehicle owners across the state. The decision is aimed at easing the financial burden on transport operators who have accumulated dues over the years due to non-renewal of taxes and fitness certificates.
Under the scheme, the government will provide a 90 per cent waiver on penalties imposed for the non-renewal of fitness certificates. Additionally, an 80 per cent waiver on penalties related to motor vehicle tax as well as passenger and goods tax has also been approved.
Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the government observed that many commercial vehicle owners had failed to renew their taxes and fitness certificates for several years, leading to huge accumulated penalties.
He noted that while the actual renewal fees were relatively low, the penalties had increased to unreasonable levels over time, placing heavy financial stress on transporters, most of whom depend on the sector for their livelihoods.
The Chief Minister said the one-time settlement scheme would help vehicle owners regularise their pending dues without excessive financial burden while also encouraging better compliance in the future.
