Assam to set up counter radicalisation cell to protect youth, Says Governor

Assam will establish a dedicated counter‑radicalisation cell to protect vulnerable youth from extremist influence and promote constitutional values, social harmony and national unity, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya told the state assembly on Friday.
In his customary address, the Governor underlined the government’s commitment to safeguarding “jati, mati and bhet” — identity, land and homeland — and said the administration would prioritise the identity, land rights, security and constitutional interests of Assam’s people, particularly tribal, indigenous and other protected communities.
Over the next five years, the state will strengthen legal and administrative measures to secure indigenous rights and address demographic concerns, he said. Legislative and administrative steps will be intensified to prevent illegal encroachment on indigenous land, curb organised cross‑border cattle smuggling and check activities that threaten social harmony and public order.
Governor Acharya also said the government would take effective measures to implement the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, to expedite detection and deportation of illegal immigrants. He did not provide operational details for the proposed counter‑radicalisation cell; the government will announce specifics later.
