Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on Friday after the party secured a historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Brigade Parade Ground, where Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to the Chief Minister and five Cabinet Ministers.
The Ministers sworn in were Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik and Kshudiram Tudu.
Mr. Adhikari, who won from both the Bhabanipur and Nandigram Assembly constituencies, will lead the BJP’s first government in the state after the party won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly. The All India Trinamool Congress secured 80 seats, ending its 15-year rule in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony coincided with Pochishe Boishakh, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The programme began with floral tributes to the poet.
Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, BJP president Nitin Nabin and several Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states attended the ceremony.
A notable moment during the event was when Prime Minister Modi greeted 97-year-old BJP veteran Makhan Lal Sarkar, an associate of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, by touching his feet and seeking his blessings.
