Assam CM Resigns; New Government to Take Oath After May 11

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday tendered his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhawan in Guwahati, following the completion of the state Assembly election process.

The Governor accepted the resignation of the Council of Ministers and dissolved the existing Legislative Assembly. The outgoing government has been asked to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed.

Speaking to the media, Sarma stated that the swearing-in ceremony of the new government is likely to take place after May 11. He also confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend the ceremony.

On the question of leadership, Sarma said that the BJP Legislature Party will decide the next Chief Minister. Central observers have been appointed to oversee the process, and once a decision is made, the NDA will formally stake its claim to form the government.

Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel submitted the official results of the Assembly elections to the Governor, along with the list of newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly.
