Agartala, May 1: In a significant breakthrough, Bishalgarh police have arrested another accused in connection with the recent shooting incidents targeting contractors in Sepahijala district and recovered three sophisticated firearms from his possession. The detained individual has been identified as Parimal Das, a close associate of the alleged mastermind Ranabir Debnath, a notorious figure in the region. Acting on a specific tip-off, police conducted a late-night raid in the Murabari area, leading to Das’s arrest. According to Sepahijala District Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma, the operation yielded three illegal pistols based on information provided during preliminary interrogation of the accused.
The case relates to a series of firing incidents reported last month at the residences of contractors Anup Saha and Chandan Debnath in the Netajinagar area of Bishalgarh. The attacks were allegedly carried out to extort money, creating widespread panic among local residents and the contractor community. Police sources had earlier indicated the involvement of Ranabir Debnath and his associates in orchestrating the attacks. In a dramatic turn of events, Debnath had recently surrendered before a court disguised as a monk. However, police continued their investigation to track down other members of the gang.
The latest arrest and recovery have brought some relief to residents of Bishalgarh and nearby areas, who had been living under fear for over a month due to the recurring violence. SP Debbarma stated that further interrogation is underway to ascertain the involvement of other individuals in the racket and to trace the source of the illegal firearms. He expressed hope that more crucial leads would emerge in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
