Boycott and Delay Mark Unusual Start to TTAADC’s New Term

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday boycotted the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected members of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), deepening visible political fissures within the powerful tribal body.
All four BJP members-elect abstained from the swearing-in held at the Council Hall in Khumulwng. In contrast, 24 elected representatives of Tipra Motha took oath of office, administered by Law Secretary Sankari Das in the presence of Chief Executive Officer Ravel Hemendra Kumar and party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.
Notably, the ceremony concluded without the announcement of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Executive Members (EMs), marking a departure from established convention. The delay has sparked speculation over internal deliberations and evolving power equations within the council.
Speaking to the media, Pradyot hinted at a forthcoming policy shift, stating that the new council would focus on “major reforms” to restructure administrative functioning. He admitted that several key initiatives remained unfulfilled during the party’s previous tenure and emphasized a renewed commitment to delivering a “new Tripura” through systemic changes.
He also urged both the Centre and the state government led by Chief Minister Manik Saha to prioritise the TTAADC, highlighting its critical role in driving inclusive development, particularly in tribal-dominated regions.
The BJP had announced its decision to boycott the ceremony a day earlier. The timeline for administering oath to its elected members remains unclear.
The twin developments, the opposition boycott and the postponement of leadership announcements—have added an element of uncertainty to the council’s immediate political trajectory.
