TRAI Seeks Public Input to Boost Public Wi-Fi Expansion in India

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday released a consultation paper on the “Proliferation of Public Wi-Fi Networks in India,” inviting stakeholders to suggest measures to accelerate the growth of public Wi-Fi infrastructure across the country.
According to the Ministry of Communications, the paper reviews the existing regulatory framework and highlights key challenges hindering the widespread deployment of public Wi-Fi networks. It also examines global best practices and international experiences to identify strategies that could be adapted for India.
The consultation paper provides an assessment of the current status of public Wi-Fi in the country, including deployment trends and demand patterns. It further identifies critical issues affecting expansion, such as infrastructure gaps, regulatory hurdles, and business viability concerns.
The paper has been made available on TRAI’s official website. Stakeholders have been invited to submit their written comments by May 25, while counter-comments can be submitted by June 8.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening digital connectivity and improving access to affordable internet services, particularly in underserved and rural areas.
