In a bold move to safeguard one of Tripura's most revered shrines, the Gomati district administration has slapped an immediate ban on lighting candles within the sacred premises of the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur. The decision, announced, prioritizes public safety amid growing fire hazards posed by open flames near flammable surroundings.
Devotees flock daily to this ancient temple, a spiritual beacon drawing thousands for offerings that traditionally include candles and agarbattis (incense sticks) at designated spots. However, a towering tree adjacent to the candle stands, coupled with other combustible materials, has escalated risks of catastrophic fires. An official memo warns: "The presence of an open flame in close proximity to the tree and other combustible materials creates a real possibility of the tree catching fire, which may endanger public safety, disrupt temple activities, and cause damage to the temple structure and surrounding areas."
To balance devotion with danger prevention, the administration has rolled out strict yet practical instructions effective immediately: Agarbattis Allowed, But Loose Only: Devotees can continue using incense sticks per longstanding customs, subject to standard safety protocols. Packets of agarbattis are banned inside the premises to curb bulk fire risks.
Candles Strictly Prohibited: No lighting or carrying candles permitted. All shopkeepers operating within and around the temple must halt candle sales without delay.
Diyas as Devout Alternative: Traditional clay diyas (oil lamps) are promoted as a safer, culturally resonant substitute. These can only be lit at approved locations, adhering to temple authority's fire safety directives.
Shopkeepers have been urged to pivot swiftly, stocking diyas and other sanctioned prayer items to meet devotee needs without compromising safety.
