Italy has dismissed suggestions that it could replace Iran at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, following remarks from a U.S.-linked official proposing a contingency plan.
Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated that such a move would be neither feasible nor appropriate, while Italian Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio emphasized that World Cup qualification must be earned on merit.
The proposal was reportedly floated by U.S. envoy Paolo Zampolli in the event that Iran withdraws from the tournament. However, FIFA has confirmed that Iran’s matches, scheduled to take place in the United States, will go ahead as planned.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that Iranian players are not barred from entering the country, although concerns remain regarding accompanying staff and officials.
Iran, which secured qualification through the Asian qualifiers, has reiterated its commitment to participate. The World Cup is set to begin in June, with matches hosted across the United States.
