Gauhati High Court Rejects Pawan Khera’s Anticipatory Bail Plea

The Gauhati High Court on Friday rejected the anticipatory bail plea filed by senior Indian National Congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with a case registered by the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police.

The bench of Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia declined to grant relief after hearing arguments from both sides. The court had earlier reserved its order on April 21 following detailed submissions.

Senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kamal Nayan Choudhury appeared for Khera, while Assam’s Advocate General Devajit Saikia opposed the plea on behalf of the state.

The case arises from allegations made by Khera during a press conference against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Khera had reportedly made claims regarding multiple passports and foreign assets.

Terming the allegations baseless, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma filed a complaint with the Crime Branch, leading to the registration of the case. With the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea, Khera currently does not have protection from arrest in the matter.
