PWD secretary reviews Muhuri river embankment work ahead of monsoon

With the monsoon approaching, Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte on Tuesday visited Belonia to assess the current condition of the Muhuri River and review the progress of embankment construction along its banks.
During the inspection, the Secretary was accompanied by District Magistrate of South Tripura Mohammad Sajad P, Municipal Chairperson Nikhil Chandra Gope, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Belonia, and senior officials from the PWD and Water Resources Department, along with other administrative representatives.
The team inspected nearly four kilometres of the river stretch, where embankment strengthening work is underway. Reviewing the progress on the ground, the Secretary directed officials to ensure that all pending work is completed before the onset of the monsoon to prevent any potential damage to residents living along the riverbanks, as well as in Belonia town and adjoining areas.
As part of the visit, key vulnerable locations including Ishan Chandranagar, Ballamukha, and Talukdar Para were also inspected. The Secretary held discussions with officials of the Border Security Force and local administration regarding embankments constructed across the border in Bangladesh.
Expressing satisfaction over the ongoing work, particularly the installation of cement concrete (CC) blocks aimed at preventing riverbank erosion, the Secretary noted that the overall river embankment project is estimated to cost around ₹100 crore.
During the visit, residents of SBC Nagar Panchayat and Talukdar Para submitted a proposal seeking the construction of a sluice gate over a local channel that connects to the Muhuri River. Taking note of the demand, the Secretary directed departmental officials to examine the feasibility of the proposal and assured necessary action.
Following the field inspection, a review meeting was held at the Circuit House, where the Secretary discussed various developmental issues concerning the Belonia municipal area with administrative officials and public representatives. Municipal authorities sought support for ongoing and proposed development works, to which the Secretary assured cooperation.
Later, Kiran Gitte briefed the media on the outcomes of the visit and interacted with journalists on the measures being taken ahead of the monsoon season.
