India’s Economy Seen Growing at 6.4% in 2026: UN Report
Apr 21, 2026
India’s economy is projected to grow at 6.4% in 2026 and 6.6% in 2027, according to a report released by the United Nations. The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2026 noted that the country continues to be a key driver of growth in the South and South-West Asia region.
The report highlighted that regional economies expanded by 5.4% in 2025, up from 5.2% in 2024, largely supported by strong performance in India. The country’s growth reached 7.4% in 2025, driven by robust consumption, particularly in rural areas, along with supportive policy measures such as goods and services tax rate cuts and a rise in exports ahead of anticipated United States tariffs.
Looking ahead, inflation in India is expected to remain stable at 4.4% in 2026 and 4.3% in 2027, reflecting a relatively balanced economic environment.
The report also underscored the importance of green industrial development. It pointed to global estimates indicating 16.6 million green jobs, with steady annual growth in employment over the past decade. India’s production-linked incentive schemes were cited as an example of how policy can encourage domestic manufacturing in sectors such as solar energy, batteries, and green hydrogen, while reducing import dependence and generating new employment opportunities.
