Agarkar’s Tenure Extended as BCCI Focuses on 2027 ODI World Cup Preparations

Ajit Agarkar will continue as the chairman of the BCCI senior selection committee after his contract was extended by one year, with the board placing emphasis on long-term planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Since taking charge in October 2023, Agarkar has overseen a highly successful phase for Indian cricket, during which the national teams reached four ICC tournament finals and secured three titles, including two T20 World Cups and one ICC Champions Trophy.
His tenure has also been marked by several significant selection decisions and transition calls. These include managing the Test retirements of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, gradually moving on from experienced pacer Mohammed Shami, and making bold squad choices such as excluding then-Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill from a T20 World Cup squad in favour of in-form wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.
The extension reflects the BCCI’s confidence in Agarkar’s leadership and a desire for continuity in shaping India’s squads ahead of the next ODI World Cup cycle.
