Guwahati Flood Situation Eases after Torrential Rains Disrupt City Life

The flood situation in Guwahati has begun to improve after torrential rains lashed the city and surrounding areas, causing widespread disruption to normal life. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, more than 100 mm of rainfall was recorded within a span of just two to three hours on Sunday, leading to severe waterlogging in several parts of the city.
In view of the adverse conditions, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration ordered the closure of all educational institutions on Monday. Gauhati University also remained shut as a precautionary measure.
The heavy downpour resulted in inundated roads, disrupted traffic movement, and temporary suspension of essential services. Several areas witnessed uprooted trees blocking key routes, further hampering connectivity. Authorities have since launched restoration efforts, clearing debris and working to normalize transportation.
The impact of the inclement weather extended beyond Guwahati, affecting multiple districts across Assam. Regions including Nalbari, Baksa, and Barpeta reported significant damage to houses and infrastructure due to strong winds and thunderstorms. The agricultural sector has also suffered considerable losses, with standing crops damaged, raising concerns among farmers.
To assist affected residents, the district administration has activated helpline numbers 93654-29314 and the toll-free emergency number 1077. Rescue and relief operations are underway, with teams working on the ground to support those impacted and assess the extent of damage.
Officials stated that while the situation is gradually returning to normal, continued efforts are being made to ensure complete restoration of services and to provide relief to affected communities.
