Supreme Court Denies Relief to Pawan Khera in Assam FIR Case

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to grant Congress leader Pawan Khera protection from arrest in connection with an FIR registered in Assam over his alleged defamatory remarks against the wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
A Bench led by Justice Maheshwari refused to extend the duration of Khera’s transit anticipatory bail and directed him to approach the competent court in Assam for appropriate relief. The Court also rejected his request to extend interim protection until Tuesday.
While denying relief, the Bench clarified that if the jurisdictional court in Assam is not functioning, Khera may seek urgent listing of his plea, which would be considered in accordance with law.
The FIR against Khera pertains to statements allegedly made by him that were deemed defamatory. With the Supreme Court’s refusal to intervene further, the matter will now proceed before the appropriate court in Assam.
