The by-election to the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in Tripura will be held on April 9, with polling scheduled between 7 am and 5 pm, Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Pandey announced on Monday.
The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen. A total of six candidates are in the fray for the North Tripura seat.
Addressing a press briefing in Agartala, the CEO informed that election campaigning will end at 5 pm on April 7, marking the beginning of the mandatory 48-hour silence period. During this time, all forms of public campaigning, including rallies and processions, will be strictly prohibited as per election norms.
The constituency has a total of 46,142 voters, including 22,384 men and 23,758 women, along with 91 service electors.
Election authorities have set up 55 polling stations across 42 locations, with 32 booths in urban areas and 23 in rural regions. Among these, 11 polling stations will be managed entirely by women, while two each will be operated by persons with disabilities and youth. Additionally, 11 model polling stations have been established.
All polling stations are equipped with essential facilities such as drinking water, lighting, ramps for differently-abled voters, toilets, and shaded waiting areas.
To ensure smooth and transparent conduct of the election, 75 micro observers have been deployed. Security and expenditure monitoring measures include six naka check-points, 24 static surveillance teams, 12 flying squads, and dedicated video surveillance teams.
Polling personnel will be dispatched from Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School, while reception centres, strong rooms, and counting centres have been secured with adequate arrangements.
The administration has also declared a dry day from April 7 to April 9. Authorities have warned that canvassing within 100 metres of polling stations is strictly prohibited and violations will invite legal action.
Vote counting is scheduled to take place on May 4.
