PM Modi Assures No Cut in Lok Sabha Seats for Southern States, Pushes Women’s Reservation
Apr 05, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured that no southern state will face a reduction in Lok Sabha seats, dismissing concerns that regions with effective population control could lose parliamentary representation in the future.
Addressing an election rally in Thiruvalla, Kerala, the Prime Minister said that misinformation is being spread regarding the possible impact of population-based seat redistribution. He emphasized that the government is committed to protecting the political representation of states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Goa. He added that a legal guarantee would be provided to ensure that no state is disadvantaged.
The issue has gained attention amid discussions on delimitation, where parliamentary seats are expected to be redistributed based on population changes. Southern states, which have successfully controlled population growth, have expressed concerns about losing representation compared to states with higher population growth.
In his address, the Prime Minister also called on all political parties to support the long-pending proposal for 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. He urged citizens to seek clear commitments from opposition parties, stating that the measure, pending for nearly four decades, should not be delayed further.
Highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment, he said the issue should rise above political differences. The women’s reservation law, passed in 2023, is expected to be implemented from 2029.
Mr. Modi also noted that the Budget Session of Parliament has been extended by three days—April 16, 17, and 18—to facilitate further steps toward implementing the legislation.
