Assam Football Legend Gilberton Sangma Passes Away at 71


Renowned Assam footballer Gilberton Sangma, popularly known as the “Man with the Golden Boot,” passed away at his residence in Guwahati on Friday. He was 71.

Sangma had been suffering from age-related ailments for the past few years and was also battling dementia. He breathed his last at around 7:30 am at his home.

A celebrated figure in Assam’s football history, Sangma earned widespread recognition for his exceptional goal-scoring abilities, which earned him his iconic nickname. His contributions to the sport played a significant role in promoting football across the northeastern region of India.

Sangma is remembered not only for his achievements on the field but also for inspiring generations of young footballers in the region. His death marks the end of an era for Assam football.
