Elderly Woman Killed in Elephant Attack; Unrest Erupts in Mungiakami

A tragic incident of human-wildlife conflict claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman in Mungiakami under Teliamura Subdivision in the early hours of Saturday, triggering widespread unrest and protests in the area.

The deceased, identified as Monimala Debbarma, was reportedly attacked by a wild tusker inside her residence in the Jumbari area of Ramkrishnapur ADC Village at around 2 a.m. The sudden and fatal attack has left the local community in shock and grief.

In response, family members and villagers staged a protest on Saturday morning by blocking the Assam–Agartala National Highway at Mungiakami market. Placing the victim’s body on the road, the protesters demanded immediate government intervention and adequate compensation. The blockade disrupted vehicular movement for several hours, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Tensions escalated when Sub-Divisional Forest Officer Dhiren Koloi arrived at the scene and was confronted by agitated villagers. He was allegedly assaulted by the mob before being rescued by local leaders and taken to safety. During the unrest, miscreants also vandalized a nearby forest beat office.

The situation further deteriorated when two journalists covering the incident were attacked. One of them, Naren Chakraborty, sustained injuries during the assault.

A large contingent of police personnel has been deployed to the area to bring the situation under control. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty also reached the spot and is currently engaged in discussions with the protesters in an effort to restore normalcy.

With ADC elections approaching, the incident has taken on political significance, with local leaders and party representatives visiting the site to express solidarity with the victim’s family.

As of the latest reports, the road blockade continues and the situation in Mungiakami remains tense.
