Single-Phase Polling Announced for Assam Assembly; Khowang Emerges as Key Constituency

Polling for all 126 Legislative Assembly constituencies in Assam is scheduled to be held in a single phase, with voting set to take place on April 9. Among the constituencies drawing significant attention is the 89 No. Khowang Legislative Assembly Constituency in Dibrugarh district.

Khowang, a predominantly rural seat, has gained prominence following the 2023 delimitation exercise. The constituency was formed after the erstwhile Moran seat was reorganized and renamed, with several villages added or shifted under the new arrangement. These changes have also influenced the demographic composition of the electorate.

According to data from the Election Commission of India, Khowang has over 157,000 registered voters. Of these, more than 81,000 are women and over 76,000 are men, along with four transgender voters. Voting will take place across 206 polling stations.

The constituency is witnessing a five-cornered contest in the upcoming election. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Chakradhar Gogoi, who will face Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad and a key figure in the Congress-led opposition alliance. Independent candidates Prabhakar Das and Biju Dowarah are also in the fray, along with another candidate.

In the 2021 Assembly election, Khowang (then part of Moran) saw a six-cornered contest. Chakradhar Gogoi of the BJP secured victory with over 49 percent of the votes, defeating candidates from the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, and independents.

With its evolving political landscape and revised boundaries, Khowang is expected to be one of the closely watched constituencies in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
