Kathmandu Court Remands Oli and Lekhak to Five-Day Custody Amid Legal Challenge

The Kathmandu District Court on Monday granted permission to detain former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak for five days to facilitate further investigation into charges related to the alleged suppression of protests in September 2025.

The order was issued by a single bench of Judge Ananda Prasad Shrestha, who deemed custodial detention necessary for the ongoing probe. Taking into account Oli’s health condition, the court directed authorities to ensure he receives adequate and effective medical treatment. Oli, who is currently undergoing treatment, appeared in court virtually from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, while Lekhak was present in person.

Meanwhile, habeas corpus petitions have been filed at the Supreme Court challenging the legality of their arrests. Oli’s petition was submitted by his spouse, Radhika Shakya, who claims that his detention is unlawful and has called for his immediate release. A separate petition has also been filed contesting Lekhak’s arrest on similar grounds.

Both leaders were taken into custody on Saturday following recommendations from a high-level commission formed by the former interim government to investigate incidents linked to the “Gen Z movement” protests held on September 8 and 9, 2025.
