India Assures Adequate Fertilizer and Fuel Supply Amid West Asia Tensions
Mar 30, 2026
The Government of India has assured that the country has sufficient stocks of fertilizers and fuel despite the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Speaking at an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi, Additional Secretary in the Department of Fertilizers, Aparna Sharma, stated that domestic urea units are currently operating at around 80 percent capacity. She noted that India requires approximately 390 tonnes of fertilizers for the upcoming Kharif season and emphasized that adequate stocks are already in place.
Sharma highlighted that although the Gulf region—an important source for fertilizer imports and raw materials—has been impacted, the government has taken proactive steps to diversify sourcing and secure additional imports. She added that April and May, typically lean agricultural months, are being used to build up reserves in preparation for peak demand.
Meanwhile, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Sujata Sharma, confirmed that there is no shortage of petroleum products in the country. She said supplies of petrol, diesel, LPG, and PNG remain stable, with refineries operating normally and crude oil inventories at sufficient levels.
To further ensure affordability and prevent price hikes, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10.
The government reiterated that it is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to maintain stability in essential supplies.
