Palm Sunday Celebrated with Fervour Across Mizoram
Mar 29, 2026
Palm Sunday was celebrated across Mizoram with deep religious fervour on Sunday, marking the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem ahead of his crucifixion.
In towns and villages across the state, children led early morning processions carrying palm leaves, chanting “Hosanna,” and singing hymns in remembrance of the occasion. The processions, an integral part of the celebration in Mizoram, were also joined by adults in many places.
Churches of various Christian denominations organised special prayer services and sermons highlighting the significance of Palm Sunday, locally known as “Tumkau Ni.” Many congregations also held traditional singing gatherings called “zaikhawm,” adding a cultural dimension to the religious observance. Special tea was served by churches as part of the celebrations, promoting community bonding.
According to Biblical teachings, Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem riding a donkey on the Sunday before his crucifixion. He was welcomed by crowds who spread palm leaves and cloaks on the road, hailing him as the long-awaited Messiah and King with chants of “Hosanna” and blessings.
The widespread participation and devotion reflected the strong Christian faith and rich cultural traditions of the people of Mizoram.
